About the Instagram Story generator
PostMock's fake Instagram Story generator builds realistic Instagram Story screenshots in your browser — vertical 9:16 canvas, authentic Instagram top progress bar, gradient story-ring avatar, and full sticker support (text overlays, polls, question stickers, @mentions, location stickers). Includes the viewer-count eye icon at the bottom for parody view-count content. Free, no watermark. Used for Story-poll parody, viewer-count satire, aesthetic Pinterest pins, and creator content. Full breakdown of how view counts work: Instagram story views explained.
How to make a fake Instagram Story screenshot
Step by step. Total time: about 60 seconds.
- 1
Open the Instagram Story generator
Land on the page. The vertical 9:16 Story canvas preview is on one side, the editor on the other. The preview shows the authentic Instagram Story chrome: progress bar at top, story-ring avatar + username + time-ago, and the bottom interaction row.
- 2
Set the profile
Set the username (lowercase, IG-style format), upload an avatar, or import a real Instagram profile in one click (auto-fills name + photo + verified badge). Set the "time ago" label — "2h" / "5h" / "1d" — matching how long ago the story would have been posted.
- 3
Upload a background image (or pick a color)
Stories are visual — the background is the bulk of the content. Upload any photo for the full-screen Story background. If you don't upload an image, pick a solid background color (great for "aesthetic text Story" content). The background fills the 9:16 canvas.
- 4
Add stickers and overlays
Add up to 5 overlay stickers: text overlays (with custom font size + color), poll stickers ('this or that' with custom vote percentages), question stickers ('Ask me anything' format), @mention stickers (handle reference), and location stickers. Position each sticker by dragging the X/Y sliders.
- 5
Toggle the viewer count
The bottom-left eye icon + view count is one of Instagram's signature Story elements. Toggle it on and set any view count — "47" reads as a small personal account, "1,247" as a mid-tier creator, "1.2M" as viral parody. Different scenarios in the 70+ pre-filled templates use different numbers.
- 6
Download the PNG
Hit Download — clean retina PNG at 9:16 aspect ratio, no watermark. Ready to drop into a TikTok or Reel as the cold-open frame. First 2 anonymous downloads, then a free Google sign-in unlocks unlimited.
What makes a believable Instagram Story screenshot
The small details people check first when they suspect a fake.
Top progress bar
Real Instagram Stories show a thin segmented progress bar at the very top of the screen. Each segment represents one Story in the user's sequence; the currently-playing segment is partially filled. Most fake Story screenshots skip this progress bar entirely — that's a giveaway. PostMock renders it by default.
Story-ring avatar in header
The user's profile photo at the top of the Story has Instagram's signature gradient ring around it (orange-to-pink-to-purple). This ring indicates an active Story. A photo without the ring reads as a regular profile photo, not a Story view. PostMock renders the gradient ring automatically.
Username + time-ago format
Right of the avatar shows the username and a time-ago label ("yourname · 2h"). Real Instagram uses casual lowercase usernames with single emoji sometimes ("mia 🌸" / "noah ✦"). The time-ago is in short format — "2h", "5h", "1d", "23h". Long timestamps ("2 hours ago") read as wrong.
Three-dots menu + close X in top right
The top-right of every Story view shows a small vertical-three-dots menu and an X (close) button. Most fakes skip these icons. Including them sells the screenshot as a real Story view.
Bottom "Send message" pill + heart + share
At the bottom of every Story view, Instagram shows a "Send message" pill (for replying to the story) on the left, a heart icon (to like the story), and a share icon. Optional viewer-count eye + number sits next to these for the user's OWN stories. PostMock renders the full bottom row.
Viewer count format ("Seen by X")
The view count uses Instagram's number-abbreviation format: under 1,000 = raw number ("847"), 1K-9.9K = with decimal ("1.2k"), 10K+ = no decimal ("47k"), 1M+ = with decimal ("1.2M"). Most fakes get this wrong (capital K vs lowercase k, comma vs no comma). PostMock's default uses Instagram's exact format.
Poll sticker = winning option highlighted
On a real Instagram Story poll, the winning option (higher vote percentage) is highlighted with the gradient color and white text; the losing option is plain. Most fakes show both options the same way. PostMock highlights the winner correctly based on which percentage is higher.
What people make with the Instagram Story generator
Real use cases creators come to us for.
"My story went viral" parody content
The single most-engaged use case. A fake Story screenshot with a wildly high view count ("1.2M views") on a wildly mundane background ("look at this coffee"). The contrast IS the joke. Browse 70+ pre-filled templates for ready-to-fork scenarios. See our how to make fake story views for the format's principles.
Engagement-poll satire
Fake "this or that" polls with absurd options ("pineapple on pizza" / "extra cheese with hair") and dramatically lopsided results. Works because real Instagram polls are everywhere — the format is universally recognized.
Question-sticker AMA content
"Ask me anything" question stickers with funny invitation prompts. Used as a content-prompt for AMA-style follow-up content. Real creators do this constantly — your fake version slots right into the feed.
Aesthetic / Pinterest Story content
Soft-aesthetic Stories with a warm-tone background, a single short caption ("slow mornings ✨"), and a location sticker. Pinterest-pin staple. Browse the aesthetic Story templates in our 70+ pre-filled templates.
Mention-stickered shoutout content
"@friend tagged" Stories used for friendship-shoutout content. The @mention sticker creates a clickable mention in real Instagram; in the screenshot it just renders as a sticker overlay. Used heavily for "look who came through" content.
Late-night moody Story content
"Can't sleep again" moody Stories with dark backgrounds and minimal text. Their own micro-niche on Instagram + Pinterest. Used as cold-open frames in moody-aesthetic TikTok content.
Travel / vacation Story mockups
Location-stickered vacation Stories with destinations like "Santorini, Greece" or "Bali". Travel-content creators use these as visual cold-open frames. The location sticker is the entire signal of where the implied photo was taken.
Frequently asked questions
16 answers about the Instagram Story generator.
Is the fake Instagram Story generator really free?
Yes — 100% free. No watermark on any download. No sign-up required to start using. The first 2 PNG downloads are anonymous; a free Google sign-in unlocks unlimited downloads after that. No paid tier exists.
Does the fake Instagram Story screenshot look like a real Story?
Yes. PostMock renders the authentic vertical 9:16 canvas, the top progress bar, the gradient story-ring avatar with username and time-ago, the three-dots menu and close X in the top-right, the bottom "Send message" pill with heart + share icons, and full sticker support (text, poll, question, mention, location). The viewer-count eye icon renders authentically with Instagram's number-abbreviation format.
Can I add a fake poll to the Story?
Yes. Add a poll sticker, set the question text + two options ("Yes" / "No" by default, or custom labels), and set the vote percentages. The winning option (higher percentage) renders with the gradient highlight; the losing one renders plain. Lopsided results (67/33) read as more authentic than perfect 50/50 splits.
Can I fake the view count on a Story screenshot?
Yes. Toggle the viewer-count eye icon and set any view count — "47" for small personal accounts, "1,247" for mid-tier creators, "1.2M" for viral-parody content. Full breakdown of what view counts mean and how the real Instagram view-list works: Instagram story views explained. How creators use fake views: how to make fake story views.
Can I add a question sticker?
Yes — add a question sticker and set the prompt text. The sticker renders with the "❓ Ask me a question" label at the top and your prompt as the question. Below the prompt, a placeholder "Type something..." line shows where viewers would type their answer in the real app.
Can I add @mention or location stickers?
Yes. The @mention sticker renders a clickable-looking mention with the @ prefix on a translucent background. The location sticker renders with a 📍 prefix on a white pill background. Both are signature Instagram Story sticker formats.
Can I import a real Instagram profile for the Story author?
Yes — type any public Instagram handle in the import field and PostMock fetches the display name, profile photo, and verified status. The data populates the story header. Note: the profile photo gets the story-ring gradient applied automatically.
Does Instagram notify the other person if I screenshot a Story?
No — for regular Stories. Instagram does NOT notify on screenshots of normal Stories, including Close Friends Stories, Stories with polls or questions or any sticker type. The only Instagram surface that notifies on screenshot is "view once" or "allow replay" disappearing media in DMs. Full breakdown: Does Instagram notify on story screenshots?.
Is it legal to make a fake Instagram Story?
For parody, comedy, fiction, education, and design mockups — yes, in essentially every country. The legal lines: do not impersonate a specific real Instagram user's Story publicly, do not use fake Stories to defraud or harass, do not fabricate Story screenshots as evidence in a real dispute. Full framework: legal framework for fake screenshots.
Can I make a fake Story with a video instead of an image?
PostMock's current Story generator renders static PNG screenshots — perfect for the "screenshot of a Story" content format. If you need an animated Story, the static screenshot is what gets shared anyway (TikTok thumbnails, Pinterest pins, Reddit posts all use static images), so the PNG output covers 95%+ of use cases.
What's the difference between this and the {{status}}?
Two different platforms. Instagram Stories use the Instagram-specific UI: story-ring avatar, "Send message" pill at the bottom, story-poll gradient. WhatsApp Status uses the WhatsApp-specific UI: "Reply" pill at the bottom, more prominent viewer-count eye icon, different progress bar style. Pick the tool that matches the platform your story is set on.
Can I make a Story with multiple stickers?
Yes — up to 5 stickers per Story. Drag the X/Y sliders to position each sticker. Real Instagram Stories rarely have more than 3-4 stickers because the screen gets cluttered, so 5 is a generous limit that covers all realistic use cases.
Where are my fake Story messages stored?
Nowhere. Every sticker, every uploaded background photo, every setting stays in your browser and is rendered locally. Nothing is sent to a server. When you close the tab, the data is gone. Signed-in users can Save creations to their account.
Why is the story-ring avatar gradient orange-to-pink?
Because that's Instagram's signature Story-ring gradient — orange (#f09433) transitioning through pink (#dc2743) to magenta (#bc1888). This ring is the universal visual signal that an account has an active Story. Real Instagram applies this ring automatically when the account has unviewed Stories.
Can I export the fake Story as a video animation?
PostMock's Story generator exports static PNGs currently. Most Story-screenshot content gets used as static images anyway — for screenshots in TikTok cold-opens, Pinterest pins, parody reposts. If you need an animated Story for an actual Instagram post, the static PNG covers most realistic use cases.
How is PostMock's Instagram Story tool different from competitors?
Three differences: (1) Full sticker support (polls, questions, @mentions, location) — most competitors only do text overlays. (2) Authentic viewer-count format with proper Instagram number abbreviation. (3) Instagram profile import auto-fills name + photo + verified status across all 16+ PostMock tools.

A note on use: Fake Instagram Stories are fine for parody, satire, aesthetic Pinterest content, and skits. Where they cross into problems: impersonating a specific real Instagram user's Story publicly, using fake Stories to defraud a real audience (e.g. faking metrics to deceive a brand partner about your real engagement), fabricating Story screenshots as evidence in a real dispute. Keep clearly fictional. Full legal framework: legal framework for fake screenshots.
